What Is keratosis pilaris?

Today we’re going to talk about Keratosis Pilaris, a condition associated with dry skin which is also nicknamed “chicken skin.” It is a condition where we can develop extremely dry skin around hair follicles on any areas of our body including face. This usually looks makes your look scaly and dehydrated due to keratotic mounds often on a red base. Usually found on arms, upper thighs and buttocks, Keratosis Pilaris can happen to both children and adults.

Why does it occur?

Well, you may be more susceptible to KP if you have atopic dermatitis, eczema or if it runs in your family. It can also happen as a side effect of cancer treatments including chemotherapy.

When is it more noticeable?

As soon as the humidity drops and the air is drier, KP is more noticeable. While it may not be painful, it may cause you emotional discomfort especially if it’s chronic.

What can I do at home to reduce Keratosis Pilaris?

-A consistent skincare regime can help reduce the severity of KP.

-Avoid hot showers consciously. They will only make your skin drier.

-Harsh soaps can cause a disruption in skin barriers, increasing water loss making your skin look scaly and lead to KP.

-Use oil-based cleansers or gentle pH balanced skin cleansers at home.

Moisturise your body when your body is still damp with close attention to body parts with KP.

-This slows down transepidermal water loss and keeps your skin hydrated in the long run.

– Speak to your dermatologist about using AHA or BHA exfoliants like salicylic acid, glycolic acid, mandelic acid and lactic acid to get lift the hair follicle and get rid of KP.
