Warm weather and long days–summers sound delightful! But are they really? With summer comes the onslaught of the dreaded summer acne breakouts. 


Do you also start experiencing breakouts as the temperatures rise? You are not alone. Summer acne breakouts on both the face and the body are extremely common. But the good news is that by taking a more seasonal approach to your skincare, you can easily treat and prevent these flare ups. 


What causes summer acne breakouts?


Do you ever wonder why the breakouts get worse in the hotter months? Here are some of the factors responsible for summer acne breakouts:

  • Heat

During summers, we tend to sweat a lot. The sweat combines with all the sticky gunk, grime, and pollutants in the air to produce the ideal environment for pores to clog and acne-causing bacteria to thrive.

We know how uncomfortable it can get during the summer because of sweat and excessive oil production. You tend to touch our skin more—blotting sweat with towels, or sheets, wiping our makeup with our fingers and dusting on powder to reduce shine. By doing so, you risk introducing acne-causing bacteria to your face and irritating your skin barrier. And we all know that an irritated skin barrier can exacerbate acne. 

  • Air-conditioning

While air-conditioning is a respite from soaring temperatures, it can worsen your summer acne breakouts. Air conditioning removes moisture from the air, making it extremely drying. Thus, it sucks moisture from your face, causing your skin to overproduce oil to compensate for the dryness. And more oil production leads to more breakouts. 


How to prevent summer acne breakouts?


Here are a few tips and tricks that can help treat and prevent your summer acne breakouts:

  • Deeply cleanse your skin

Excessive heat and humidity can cause your oil glands to work overtime, thus leading to summer acne breakouts. You can’t stop your oil glands from producing oil, but you can take steps to control excess production.

It is crucial to cleanse your face twice a day during summer to get rid of all the sweat and oil. I recommend using a gentle, foaming face wash to get rid of acne and prevent future breakouts.   • Switch to a lightweight moisture

Switch to a lightweight moisture

Have you been using heavy, intensely hydrating moisturisers during the cooler months? To keep summer acne breakouts at bay, I recommend swapping out heavier and thicker moisturisers for more lightweight, water-based lotions and serums. Humectants, such as hyaluronic acid, are great for summers as they provide hydration without the risk of pore-clogging– especially when combined with clarifying products.   • Swap out your sunscreen

But if you have oily, acne-prone skin, slathering on a greasy sunscreen can cause problems. Use a lightweight, non-comedogenic mineral sunscreen to prevent stickiness and summer acne breakouts. To prevent body acne, I recommend using spray-on clear sunscreens, which are alcohol-based and hence less likely to clog your pores. 

  • Add active ingredients to your skincare

  • Salicylic acid: Salicylic acid is a godsend for people with acne-prone skin as it unclogs pores and reduces inflammation. Whether you are dealing with whiteheads, blackheads, or pustules, salicylic acid can treat them all. 
  • Benzoyl peroxide: If you are dealing with inflammatory acne, you can add benzoyl peroxide to your skincare regimen. It kills acne-causing bacteria and stops breakouts dead in their tracks. You can add a benzoyl peroxide face wash or toner into your skincare routine or directly use it as a spot treatment.
